Do Veneers Cause Tooth Sensitivity?

Are you looking for a beautiful, natural-looking, and relatively fast way to improve multiple aspects of your smile? While some solutions could require several procedures, durable, lifelike porcelain veneers can change the shape, size, spacing and even the color of your teeth instantly. But many patients are hesitant to try them because they’ve heard they could cause tooth sensitivity. Here’s why this happens, how long it usually lasts, and why there’s no reason to let it stop you from getting the gorgeous, glowing grin you desire!

Will Getting Veneers Make My Teeth Sensitive?

When you get veneers, your dentist must remove a small amount of enamel from each tooth. This reduces their thickness, so the veneers fit better and are more comfortable in your mouth. Once this step is complete, your dentist will take impressions of your teeth and fit you with temporary restorations to wear while your permanent prosthetics are made at the dental lab.

Unfortunately, however, because your enamel is thinner, your teeth may experience increased sensitivity while wearing temporary veneers. The good news is that once your permanent ones are placed, this should go away on its own.

How Can I Prevent Tooth Sensitivity with Temporary Veneers?

While there’s no way to guarantee that you can prevent tooth sensitivity with temporary veneers, there are still a few important steps you can take to reduce your risk of it occurring:

  • Avoid eating anything too hot, cold, sweet, or acidic, as these can irritate the delicate nerves inside your teeth.
  • Use a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth to rebuild the minerals in your enamel and protect the nerves.
  • Don’t use harsh chemicals on your teeth such as bleaching gels or white strips. Please also note that whitening products will not work on your veneers, so if they ever become discolored, you’ll need to have your restorations re-shaded or replaced.

What Should I Do if Tooth Sensitivity Doesn’t Go Away?

Although in most cases tooth sensitivity should clear up once your permanent veneers are placed, if you are still experiencing it several weeks later, talk to your dentist, as you may need to have your veneers adjusted.

Remember, while it’s not uncommon to experience some temporary sensitivity following the placement of temporary veneers, if it has still not cleared up once your permanent restorations are attached, talk to your dentist, and soon you’ll have a healthy, beautiful, pain-free smile you can be proud of!
